Pattern - The Protector
YOUR BODY BLUEPRINT
Primary pattern: The Protector
Underlying tendency: Using behaviour to regulate an internal state or meet an unrecognised need
Often showing up in: Nutrition, sleep, movement, stress and regulation
What you've been relying on: Comfort • escape • stimulation • relief • reward
What to build instead: Awareness • emotional regulation • alternative ways to meet the need • self-trust
Heres what it looks like
You've eaten dinner, you're physically satisfied.
And yet an hour later, you're back in the kitchen looking for something sweet.
So you tell yourself: “I'm not even hungry. Why am I doing this?” But maybe hunger was never what brought you there.
Maybe you've spent twelve hours working, parenting, making decisions, being responsible and doing things for everybody else.
And that food represents something …the day is over.I get something now.
Or maybe you've told yourself you're going to get an early night.
You're exhausted…You know you'll feel better tomorrow if you sleep.
And yet somehow you're still scrolling at 11:47pm….You've called it a lack of discipline.
But maybe those two hours in bed with your phone are the only part of the day that feels completely yours.
Or you keep avoiding training…… You genuinely want to be someone who exercises..you've got the program and you know what to do.
But every time the session comes around, something in you resists it….Before deciding you're lazy, I'd want to know:
Does training currently feel like support... or does it feel like another demand? That's a very different problem.
The part I want you to question
You’ve been taught to look at health behaviour very literally.
Eating when you're not hungry? “Stop eating”
Skipping workouts? “Be more disciplined”
Staying up too late? “Put your phone away”
Procrastinating? “Just start”
But behaviour doesn't exist in isolation…It happens inside a person..Inside a day…inside a life.
And sometimes the behaviour you've spent years fighting is actually the fastest, easiest or most familiar way you've learned to change how you feel.
That doesn't mean every behaviour is helpful and it doesn't mean we leave behaviours alone when they're no longer serving you.
It means:
Before we try to remove a behaviour, we understand why it's there.
Because when you understand the function, you finally have somewhere useful to intervene.
What this pattern can cost you
The biggest cost isn't necessarily the behaviour itself, it's the relationship you build with yourself because of it.
You promise yourself you won't do something..You do it again….you feel frustrated…and then you create stricter rules.
You hold them for a while….then the underlying need appears again.
The behaviour returns.
And every repetition becomes another piece of evidence for the story:
“I can't trust myself.”
So you tighten the rules even further..but if the behaviour was helping regulate stress, create relief, provide comfort or meet an unmet need, more control doesn't necessarily remove the need ,sometimes it just makes the behaviour feel even more loaded when it happens.
And suddenly you're fighting yourself instead of understanding yourself.
This isn’t self Sabotage
This is one of the most important distinctions I want you to take from your result.
Your behaviour isn't necessarily evidence that some part of you is determined to ruin your progress.
Often it's evidence that something needs something…the behaviour may simply be the strategy you've learned to use.
So rather than: “What's wrong with me?” or “Why can't I stop doing this?” we start with:
What is this behaviour trying to solve?
Relief, Comfort, Escape, Stimulation, Safety, Reward, Connection?
Once we know what you're actually seeking, we can start building more ways of meeting that need.
What Becomes Possible
Imagine standing in the kitchen at night and recognising:
“I’m not actually hungry. I’m completely depleted, and I’m looking for comfort.”
Not with judgement.. With information.
Imagine missing a workout and getting curious about what needs adjusting, instead of calling yourself lazy and writing off the entire week.
Imagine noticing when stress is driving you to eat, restrict, overtrain or give up before you’re already halfway through the pattern.
And then imagine having more than one way to respond….Because getting into shape isn’t only about knowing what to eat or how to train.
It’s being able to follow through without constantly fighting yourself.
It’s adjusting when life gets busy without abandoning the goal.
It’s making progress without needing to be perfect.
And it’s knowing how to get results you can actually maintain.
The goal is to understand yourself well enough that one choice no longer becomes three days, three weeks or another complete restart.
That’s how you create consistency and that’s how your body changes.
And that’s how getting into shape stops feeling like something you’re always starting again.
Your pattern is only one part of the picture
Your quiz result shows us how your health tends to play out.
That's why inside Elemental Health, we don't simply look at the behaviour.
We ask what the behaviour is responding to.
Your Body Blueprint looks across the five interconnected areas influencing your health:
Mindset & Awareness. Training. Nutrition. Recovery. Stress & Regulation.
We look at what's happening, what's driving it and what your body may actually need instead.
Because you probably don't need another plan telling you how to be healthier.
You need to understand the person the plan is asking to follow it.
